\nFirst Essay Tips

1. \u00a0The first essay should identify the controversy or issue with which you are concerned and the terms on which the debate has waged. \u00a0Your particular focus should be on answering why<\/i>\u00a0this particular issue has emerged as a source of controversy.<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0Your essay should include a strong thesis statement. \u00a0<\/i>The essay, in other words, does not simply “describe” a controversy; instead, it will present an argument about that controversy.<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Pay close attention to your organizational strategy<\/i>. \u00a0Your essay should not simple describe two sides of a debate, but rather should present clear evidence to support your argument in a way that makes sense to the reader. \u00a0I highly recommend outlining in advice.<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0Leave time for revision. \u00a0Do not wait to draft your essay until the last minute.<\/p>\n

5. \u00a0You should use a variety of primary and secondary sources to write your essay. \u00a0Of particular importance for this essay will be contemporary newspapers, magazines, and internet reporting, alongside any relevant secondary material (see the bibliography in the back of Hubbard’s book for suggestions).<\/p>\n

6. \u00a0Cite all material you consult and reference. \u00a0Citations should follow either the notes or parenthetical citation methods described in Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers<\/i>\u00a0(available at the research desk in the library) or The Chicago Manual of Style <\/i>(available at the research desk or at\u00a0http:\/\/www.chicagomanualofstyle.org\/tools_citationguide.html<\/a>). \u00a0Most historians follow the former, while sociologists follow the latter. \u00a0Practice the method most amenable to your own major.<\/p>\n

7. \u00a0Conclude your essay by gesturing to the ways in which your particular area of focus relates to your larger group project and\/or the historical dimension of the next essay assignment.<\/p>\n

8. \u00a0Do not forget that your topic should, in some way, engage both the issue of sexuality\u00a0and<\/i>\u00a0the city, not one or the other.<\/p>\n

9. \u00a0Do not hesitate to see me with questions and\/or drafts during office hours, but please do not wait until the last minute to make an appointment.<\/p>\n

A strong essay will therefore include:<\/p>\n

1. \u00a0A clear thesis statement<\/p>\n

2. \u00a0A logical organization<\/p>\n

3. \u00a0Clear and appropriate evidence to support the argument<\/p>\n

4. \u00a0A thoughtful conclusion<\/p>\n
